UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to present a timetable for his departure from No. 10 Downing Street this week, following Andy Burnham’s triumphant return to Westminster after winning the by-election in Makerfield, Manchester, according to a report by the Sunday newspaper Observer.
The Prime Minister is said to have concluded that it is no longer feasible for him to remain in office, following talks in recent days with his ministers, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders and Labour Party donors.
Although over the weekend Starmer is discussing the matter with his wife Victoria at their country residence before making a final decision, the newspaper cites senior Labour figures who believe that a “clear statement” could be made as early as Monday.
A member of the House of Lords, described in the report as close to the Prime Minister, insisted that Starmer will not “walk away” from No. 10 leaving a vacuum, but will instead “prepare a thoughtful, gradual and well-organised exit out of a sense of responsibility and dignity.”
