Keir Starmer steps down after mounting pressure within Labour, just two years after leading the party to a landslide election victory.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation from both the premiership and the leadership of the Labour Party, in a statement outside Downing Street, according to the BBC.

Starmer said the key question facing the party was whether he remained the right person to lead it into the next general election. He stated that he had “heard the answer” from his party and was accepting it.

He added that every decision he had taken in office was guided by the national interest, stressing that he had always sought to put Britain first.

Before stepping down, Starmer reflected on his time as Labour leader, saying he inherited a party that was “politically, financially and morally bankrupt,” He argued that many believed Labour’s political career was over at the time, but he proved otherwise.

He also said he had transformed the party, removing what he described as “the poison of antisemitism” and restoring trust in the economy, defence and national security.

Starmer described his arrival at Downing Street in 2024 as the proudest moment of his life, adding that he entered politics to improve the lives of millions.

The announcement came as senior government figures and aides gathered at Downing Street. According to the BBC, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was among those present.

The development is seen as a major moment in British politics, coming just two years after Labour’s decisive election victory in July 2024.
