French President Emmanuel Macron is safe and continuing his visit to Syria following two explosions near the hotel where he spent the night in central Damascus, the Élysée Palace confirmed on Tuesday.

According to French presidential officials, Macron had already departed the hotel by the time the explosions occurred.

He is currently at the Presidential Palace in Damascus, where he is taking part in an expanded meeting between the French and Syrian delegations.

The talks include discussions between the leaders of the two countries and are due to be followed by a one-on-one meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

French officials stressed that Macron's programme has continued as scheduled despite the security incident.

Earlier reports indicated that two explosions occurred near the hotel where the French president had been staying. No injuries involving the French delegation have been reported.
