The French president's repeated appearances in aviator sunglasses have fuelled speculation, with reports suggesting he may be dealing with an eye problem.

The distinctive aviator sunglasses worn by Emmanuel Macron have sparked a fresh wave of speculation after the French president began wearing them at a series of official appearances, including some indoors.

Macron attended the NATO summit in Ankara wearing the now-familiar sunglasses, once again prompting questions about his health.

It was not the first time he had been seen wearing them. His initial appearance with the sunglasses came in January during the World Economic Forum in Davos, when he wore them for several days before abandoning the look.

However, on June 29, Macron welcomed the Sultan of Oman to the Élysée Palace wearing the same sunglasses. From that moment, social media was flooded with comments and speculation over what might be behind the repeated appearances.

Shortly afterwards, the French president appeared alongside his wife, Brigitte Macron, on the steps of the presidential palace to welcome King Rama X of Thailand, Queen Suthida and Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana.

Macron kept the sunglasses with their distinctive blue lenses on throughout the visit, particularly during the delegation's visit to Les Invalides, where the bright summer sunlight was noticeable.

The same evening, during an official state dinner, the Henry Jullien Pacific S 01 sunglasses remained firmly in place while the First Lady and other guests appeared in formal evening attire.

The image was repeated on July 1, when Macron met Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and Grand Duchess Stéphanie at the Élysée Palace, again wearing the sunglasses throughout the engagement.

Why won't Emmanuel Macron take off the sunglasses?

The intense sunshine brought by France's recent heatwave does not appear to be the only explanation. The 48-year-old president also delivered a speech indoors while wearing the sunglasses during the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty on June 30.

Is it simply a fashion choice?

According to sources close to the French president, the answer is no. They say Macron is experiencing “an eye problem,” although no further details have been disclosed.

According to French news website La Dépêche, Macron is believed to be suffering from an ophthalmological condition that could be linked to conjunctivitis.

As a result, the Pacific S 01 sunglasses, whose appearance has drawn comparisons with the film Top Gun, may be serving not only as a stylish accessory but also as a discreet way of concealing an eye that may be red or particularly sensitive due to an underlying condition.
