A Ukrainian court has ordered two men to remain in custody over the killing of a woman suspected of carrying out a bombing in Monaco that seriously injured a Ukrainian-born businessman.
The body of 39-year-old Ukrainian national Anastasiia Berezovska was found with gunshot wounds to the head, Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday. Bullets from a handgun were reportedly discovered near the scene.
Suspects held without bail
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office said a Kyiv court ordered the detention of the two suspects without the possibility of bail.
The men are described as a serving officer of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, HUR, and a former law enforcement officer. Both are suspected of involvement in Berezovska’s killing.
Ukrainian media, citing court proceedings, reported that the HUR officer later withdrew an alleged confession. He claimed that the second suspect had shot Berezovska and said he had confessed because he feared for his life.
The allegations have not yet been tested in court.
Interpol search linked to Monaco attack
Berezovska had been wanted by Interpol in connection with the bombing in Monaco on 29 June.
Monaco authorities accused her of attempted murder, alleging that she had placed an explosive device in a public area with criminal intent.
The explosion injured Ukrainian-born businessman Vadim Yermolayev, his partner and his son, according to sources.
Yermolayev’s Cyprus connection
Yermolayev obtained Cypriot citizenship in 2019 and was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023.
Ukrainian media reported that the sanctions were imposed because of his business activities in Russian-occupied Crimea.
