More than 3,500 Ebola infections have now been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as authorities struggle to contain the virus’s rapid spread. Government figures show that the outbreak has exceeded the country’s previous 2018-2020 epidemic in total cases.
Cases surpass previous Congo outbreak
The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 3,532 cases, compared with the 3,481 infections reported during the 2018-2020 outbreak.
The country’s Ministry of Communications said in a post on X that 1,556 deaths have also been recorded.
West Africa outbreak remains the largest
The 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa remains the largest Ebola epidemic on record.
According to the World Health Organization, 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths were reported across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone during that outbreak.
