A major emergency response is under way after a train derailed near Lewes in southern England on Thursday afternoon. Images shared on social media appear to show at least two carriages lying on their sides, with passengers visible on top of them.

Emergency crews at the scene
The derailment was reported shortly before 4pm local time, causing significant disruption across the area’s rail network.
British Transport Police said it received a report of the incident at 3.54pm. Officers were deployed alongside rescue workers and fire crews.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service urged the public to avoid the area, while Sussex Police said it was assisting British Transport Police with the investigation and management of the incident.

Several routes suspended
According to Brighton and Hove News, rail operator Southern suspended services between Brighton and Lewes, Haywards Heath and Lewes, and Lewes, Seaford and Eastbourne.
Passengers aboard trains near Lewes station were told to remain on board until further notice.
Southern said the relevant authorities were working to assess the impact of the derailment on the wider network.
