New evidence has emerged over the circumstances surrounding the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis during a plasmapheresis procedure, with CCTV footage reportedly providing new details about the movements of Ilias Theodoropoulos, owner of the Stem Cell medical practice on Karneadou Street.
According to Proto Thema, footage from a restaurant in Kolonaki appears to raise questions over parts of the doctor's account, while discrepancies have also emerged between witness statements concerning the timing of Mazonakis' treatment and cardiac arrest.
CCTV footage and the doctor's movements
According to the report, CCTV images show Theodoropoulos entering a restaurant in Kolonaki at 13:59 and leaving at 14:43.
The timing is considered significant because Theodoropoulos reportedly said that he was away from the practice having lunch at the relevant time and was informed about Mazonakis' condition by his wife, after which he returned to the practice.
According to Proto Thema, Mazonakis arrived at the practice at 13:55, based on the testimony of the taxi driver who took him there.
The practice's secretary is also reported to have confirmed that arrival time, conflicting with claims that the singer arrived at around 16:00.
Theodoropoulos has denied involvement in the incident, maintaining that he was absent from the practice when Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest. He reportedly said that after learning what had happened, he immediately returned and took part in resuscitation efforts, performing CPR and administering two injections of adrenaline.
Timeline raises further questions
Particular attention is being paid to the timeline contained in the case file, according to Proto Thema.
Charalambos Lykoudis, the lawyer representing the Mazonakis family, told ANT1, citing evidence from the case file, that the singer had lost consciousness considerably earlier than the call to emergency medical services.
According to Lykoudis, data from the machine's software showed that it was activated at 14:12 and remained in operation for 42 minutes, bringing the timeline to approximately 14:54.
He argued that this indicates Mazonakis had lost consciousness around an hour and a half before emergency services were called.
On the basis of these findings, the family's lawyer has asked the investigating judge to upgrade the charge against the two doctors from fatal exposure to homicide with possible intent.
Contradictions in witness statements
According to Proto Thema, investigators are also examining discrepancies between statements given by Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka.
One of the main differences concerns how long Mazonakis remained in the room containing the treatment machine.
Gaka reportedly testified that the singer was in the room for only a very short period and that the machine had not yet been activated when he collapsed.
That account reportedly conflicts with testimony from the practice's secretary, identified as M., who said Mazonakis remained in the treatment room for at least 42 minutes.
According to Proto Thema, police consider this one of the key contradictions in the case.
A nurse at the practice reportedly testified that at around 15:00 the singer entered the premises and remained for approximately half an hour in the doctor's main office.
According to the same testimony, he then went with Gaka to the room containing the INUS PHERESIS machine for the scheduled treatment.
Gaka reportedly said in her statement that Mazonakis lay on the bed and was connected to equipment monitoring his vital signs.
She said she inserted an intravenous catheter and that the cardiac arrest occurred while she was attempting to insert a second catheter.
According to her testimony, cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts then began.
Funeral to take place Monday
Relatives, friends, colleagues and fans will say their final farewell to Giorgos Mazonakis on Monday, September 14, at the Third Cemetery of Nikaia at 13:00.
