North Korea launched an unidentified projectile off its eastern coast on Sunday, prompting military monitoring by South Korea and Japan.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch was directed towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
“North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the East Sea,” the South Korean military said in a statement.
Japan's Prime Minister's Office also confirmed the launch, saying in a message on X that North Korea had fired “one or more ballistic missiles, as assessed”.
Japan's Defence Ministry later said the projectile had “already fallen”, without providing further details. Public broadcaster NHK reported that it landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The launch came hours after North Korea rejected a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency condemning the development of its nuclear programme.
