US President Donald Trump said he is "disappointed" with former US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle and declined to comment on whether he would grant her a pardon should she become involved in legal proceedings, stating: "I don't even want to think about it."
The remarks came during an interview with conservative television network Newsmax, where Trump addressed a range of issues, including reports concerning Guilfoyle's conduct and the possibility of future legal challenges.
Trump distances himself
During the interview, Trump was asked whether Guilfoyle could face legal developments amid reports alleging conflicts of interest and abuse of power, and whether he would consider granting her a presidential pardon.
The president adopted a cautious stance.
"I've read some things. I haven't spoken with her," Trump said. "The interesting thing is that she was very popular in Greece. She did a very good job as ambassador to Greece, so I'm disappointed."
He added that the reports currently circulating were not favourable to her.
Democratic committee considering testimony
The matter has also taken on a political dimension.
A Democratic committee is reportedly planning to call Guilfoyle to testify following reports published by The Wall Street Journal, which allege conflicts of interest and abuse of power.
No formal findings have been announced, and the reported allegations remain the subject of political scrutiny.
Potential civil dispute emerges
Guilfoyle is also facing a separate dispute involving US financier Eric Deters.
According to the report, Deters is threatening legal action, claiming that his account of events is accurate and disputing Guilfoyle's version. The development places the former ambassador under pressure from both potential congressional proceedings and a possible court battle.
No mention of ties to the Trump family
Observers also noted what Trump did not say during the interview.
While discussing Guilfoyle's background, the president referred to her as the former wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom. However, he made no reference to her previous relationship with his son.
That relationship reportedly lasted about six years and was not mentioned at any point during the interview. There was also no reference to an engagement or any personal connection to the Trump family.
