Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that hostile forces around the world are working to ensure his defeat in the upcoming election, alleging that there are indications that “Iranians have become involved in efforts to influence the electoral process”.
In an interview with Israeli broadcaster i24, Netanyahu also addressed what he described as the threat posed by Iran, arguing that “the only way to prevent future cycles of confrontation with Iran is the overthrow of the regime”.
He said he had directed both Mossad and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to pursue that objective.
Trump ‘ready to help’
Netanyahu further claimed that US President Donald Trump had expressed willingness to assist in achieving that goal.
According to Netanyahu, the two leaders intend to work together towards what he described as “finishing the Iran issue”.
Regional ties
The Israeli leader also argued that many countries in the region are seeking closer relations with Israel because they recognise its strength.
He described Israel as “the strongest power in the Middle East”.
Warning of possible pre-election attack
Netanyahu additionally warned that Israel could face an attack in the days leading up to the 27 October election.
He said intelligence received from Mossad and military intelligence services indicated the possibility of an operation aimed at influencing the vote.
“We have received relevant information from Mossad and the military and we are preparing for it,” he said.
The prime minister did not specify who might carry out such an attack, nor did he provide details about its location or nature.
