President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides will travel to Egypt on Monday to participate in the high-level summit on the reconstruction of Gaza. The President is expected to present a detailed plan that includes the involvement of Cypriot companies in rebuilding efforts, as well as Cyprus’ broader role in regional security.

Speaking to the press after a memorial service in Saranti, Christodoulides confirmed a series of high-level phone calls with international leaders ahead of the summit. He spoke yesterday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and European Council President Charles Michel. He was scheduled to speak with the President of the United Arab Emirates at 11 a.m on Sunday.

“I would like to publicly thank US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President el‑Sisi for inviting our country to attend the peace ceremony for Gaza. Only 22 countries, along with key institutions, were invited. I consider this a clear recognition of the Republic of Cyprus’ role in the region - what we have done so far, and what the international community expects from us going forward,” he said.

Cyprus to play a role in reconstruction

Christodoulides noted that Cyprus will present a specific plan at the summit, with emphasis on two key areas: the participation of Cypriot companies in Gaza’s reconstruction and the Republic’s role in regional security.

“These areas are part of what has already been agreed in the first phase of the broader agreement. Full implementation of this first phase is crucial for progressing to the next stage. We will be in Egypt with the Foreign Minister and the Deputy Minister for European Affairs to represent the Republic at this very important event,” he stated.

Asked whether Cyprus’ participation in the summit strengthens its position internationally, the President pointed to recent initiatives such as the Amalthea humanitarian corridor and evacuation efforts from the region. “This invitation is a clear acknowledgment of our contribution and the role we can play moving forward,” he said.

“We’re not resting on past achievements, although it is positive that they are being recognised. We have a clear roadmap ahead, especially regarding reconstruction and further humanitarian aid,” he added.

Security oversight

The President also addressed Israel’s longstanding demand that all aid entering Gaza be subject to prior checks. He emphasised that Cyprus is well-positioned to fulfil this requirement through the CYCLOPS training centre in Larnaca, which supports security and compliance efforts.

“The Republic of Cyprus has excellent relations with all neighbouring states. At the same time, we are an EU member and represent the Union in the region. In less than 90 days, we will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Within this context, we continue to demonstrate - through actions, not just words - the added value that Cyprus brings,” he said.
