All Eyes on Brussels as Cyprus Nears Its EU Moment

President Nikos Christodoulides joins key EU summits in the final days before Cyprus assumes the EU Council Presidency

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides is travelling to Brussels today, Wednesday 17 December, to participate in the EU–Western Balkans Summit and the European Council meeting, according to an announcement by the Presidency.

Later today, President Christodoulides will take part in the EU–Western Balkans Summit.

On Thursday, 18 December, he will attend the European People’s Party (EPP) Summit in the morning. This will be followed by his now-established meeting with a number of European leaders, with migration expected to be the central topic of discussion.

He will then participate in the proceedings of the European Council. On the sidelines of the summit, the President is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with fellow heads of state and representatives of EU institutions, in view of Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

During the European Council meeting, EU leaders will be briefed on developments in Ukraine by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

A working lunch on EU enlargement will follow, after which discussions will focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034 and the situation in the Middle East.

In the evening, leaders of the EU member states will attend a working dinner dedicated to issues of geoeconomics and competitiveness.

President Christodoulides is accompanied in Brussels by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, Director of the President’s Press Office Victor Papadopoulos, Deputy Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Nektarios Soteriou, and senior officials. He is expected to return to Cyprus on 19 December.
