Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on Wednesday expressed hope that reports of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran would be confirmed, stressing that de-escalation remains the primary objective.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress, he said he hoped the developments would hold. “I truly hope all this is confirmed. De-escalation is the main goal,” he told reporters.

Christodoulides said Cyprus has a particular interest in the situation, citing both its role in the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the upcoming informal European Council meeting to be held on the island shortly after Easter.

“We are following very closely what is coming to light and we genuinely hope it will be confirmed and achieve the goal of de-escalation,” he said.

He added that reducing tensions is a shared objective among countries in the region and expressed hope that ongoing efforts would prove successful.

Any de-escalation would be positive “for our country, for our citizens, for the region, for the world, and for the European Union,” he said.
