A Greek Cypriot man has been arrested in the north on allegations of entering a prohibited military zone in the Gerolakkos area.

According to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kıbrıs, the man had reportedly gone to the area to collect wild asparagus when he approached a military zone. During a search of his vehicle, authorities said they found 16 hunting shotgun cartridges.

The man was initially brought before a 'military court' on charges of “violating a prohibited zone” and was later presented before the 'Nicosia District Court,' where he was charged with unlawful possession and transportation of explosive materials.

During the proceedings, a police officer told the court that on 10 February 2026 at around 16:00, the suspect’s vehicle was searched in the Gerolakkos area, where the alleged breach of the military zone was identified. The officer requested that the court impose a financial guarantee.

Prosecutor Ali Yegen stated that an investigation is ongoing into the offence of unlawful entry into a military prohibited zone and requested that the suspect remain in custody until trial.

After reviewing the evidence, Judge Sevket Gazi ordered the detention of the suspect for a period not exceeding four days.
