Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman has expressed concern over recent developments in the region following US and Israeli operations against Iran, citing the incident at the Akrotiri Base as a source of anxiety for both the wider region and Cyprus.

In a post on social media, Erhurman said that after Britain granted the United States permission to use the British Bases for defensive purposes, the Turkish Cypriot “military command” confirmed that Iran had launched an attack on the Akrotiri bases using an unmanned aerial vehicle. He stated that there were no casualties and only minor material damage.

Erhurman called for reason to prevail and for diplomatic and dialogue mechanisms to be activated without delay in order to halt further attacks and loss of life.

In a separate post, former Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said that the clerical regime in Iran has “no justification”, while US and Israeli actions lack legitimacy. He argued that the only beneficiaries of the current situation are arms manufacturers and oil companies, whose profits will rise, while ordinary people grow poorer and innocent civilians lose their lives.
