The political will of our side to achieve meaningful progress on the Cyprus issue is a given, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Presidential Palace, Letymbiotis said: “The meeting between the President of the Republic and the Turkish Cypriot leader will take place next Monday, 6 April, at 4.30pm, at the residence of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary‑General.

“This meeting forms part of the ongoing efforts to restart substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue, on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

“The President of the Republic, following his recent meeting with the UN Secretary‑General in Brussels, has expressed cautious optimism, noting the clear political will and the specific plan put forward by the Secretary‑General to advance the process.

“Turning this intention into a substantive initiative requires corresponding readiness from all parties involved, in order to create the conditions for resuming talks from the point at which they were interrupted.

“We underline once again, clearly, that our political will is certain and unwavering, with the aim of achieving meaningful progress as soon as possible through a process that will lead to substantive negotiations with perspective and results,” he said.

Letymbiotis added: “In this context, the decisive role of the United Nations is recognised. Within its mandate, and with the active involvement of the UN Secretary‑General himself and his Personal Envoy, the UN can meaningfully contribute to pushing developments forward.”

The spokesperson said the upcoming was “another significant opportunity to determine whether this political will can translate into concrete steps towards the resumption of a substantive process”.
