The European Union has extended restrictive measures for foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus until 15 June, in an effort to curb the spread of the virus and safeguard livestock.
Speaking on state radio, Director of Veterinary Services Christodoulos Pipis said the situation has already had negative consequences for pork exports. He clarified, however, that halloumi exports remain unaffected.
At the same time, he urged livestock farmers to strictly comply with the measures in place, stressing that effective management of the crisis depends largely on the cooperation of all involved.
Vaccination of animals is ongoing and is considered critical in limiting transmission. Additional vaccine quantities have already been secured, including doses for pigs sourced from other EU member states.
The total number of infected livestock units has now reached 108, following the detection of new cases at three sheep and goat farms in the Athienou area.
