The Union of Journalists of Cyprus highlighted the decisive role of independent journalism in preventing conflict and strengthening social cohesion, in a statement issued to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3.
Press Freedom as the Pillar of Democracy
The union said it honours journalists worldwide who have lost their lives or face persecution while performing their duties.
“Press freedom is the oxygen of democracy. Without it, peace and social justice remain fragile,” the statement stressed.
New Challenges and Legal Protection
Marking World Press Freedom Day, the Union of Journalists underlined the need to protect journalists and to address new challenges arising from the development of artificial intelligence and the spread of disinformation.
It also stressed the urgency of modernising the Press Law, which dates back to the 1980s, as well as the need to protect journalists from abusive legal actions aimed at silencing investigative reporting.
Commitment to Journalistic Independence
At the same time, the board of the Union of Journalists reaffirmed its commitment to continue the struggle to improve working conditions and defend journalistic independence.
“We commit to continuing our efforts for the renewal of the sector’s collective agreement, which acts as a safeguard against professional degradation and manipulation, and for its universal application across all workplaces,” the statement said.
The union concluded by stressing that it marks World Press Freedom Day through action, by defending society’s right to independent and unbiased information.
