A combined ground forces and aerial fire fighting effort controlled the blaze in four hours, preventing flames from spreading to the outskirts of Mouttayiaka in the Limassol district, according to the latest fire service report.
Isolated homes and farms were protected in the large scale operation which saw the activation of the Pyrsos and Icarus 2 umbrellas, as 11 aircrafts and helicopters supported crews in 11 vehicles from the Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Vassiliko stations.
The Forestry Department with 10 vehicles and a ceew of 62, including the Forestry Department Director on site, the gaming service, the Limassol local authority, civil defence, police, as well as volunteer groups contributed to the fire fighting effort.
Crews will remain on site during the evening for possible rekindling.
