A horrific accident in the early hours of Sunday, took a life along Limassol's main coastal avenue, with the victim named as 20 year old Ahmad Al Matar, a political refugee from Syria. The road collision happened when the 26 year old hit and run over the young cyclist, near the Municipal Gardens area, just beyond Enaerios.

According to a police report, the 26 year old was speeding and run a red light in the previous crossing prior to the accident. He underwent a breathalyser and narcotest, both of which were positive. Authorities noted that according to an eye witness account, the cyclist was biking right in the middle of the avenue, without a helmet. There was a bike path next to the victim, in the same direction.

As Traffic Department Superintendent Marios Charalambous said, the accident occurred at 0130 past midnight, when the 26 year old, driving a saloon vehicle on the coastal avenue, headed west, under as yet unidentified circumstances, run over and fatally injured a 20 year old cyclist.
He was rushed to the Limassol General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Charalambous noted the significant distance between the impact point and where the vehicle and the bicycle ended up following the accident. Limassol traffic continues to investigate the circumstances which led to the fatal incident.
