Annita Demetriou became the voice of many and spoke to the heart of most, it seems, during a spicy exchange with OELMEK President Dimitris Taliadoros, who became the focus of social indignation, universal in nature, after a comment directed at Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, which connected her professional capacity, ability and gender in a highly offensive stereotypical manner.
'What they wanna do is tell us that a woman solved the evaluation issue after 50 years', is what Taliadoros had said.
The heated exchange occured at the entrance to parliament as the union leader was waiting along with teachers to speak to her during a demonstration on the proposed evaluation bill.
Protesters had gathered at nine and the House Speaker arrived at 1030 to the utter displeasure of Taliadoros, who appears to have made a 'you're late' remark to Demetriou.
To which she immediately turned and hit straight back. She did not mince her words.
'You seem to be frequently reprimanding women of late dear Dimitris', she said in response and relating to the Michaelidou comment, catching Taliadoros off guard.
OELMEK's President, who had also been condemned by his fellow teachers, tried to justify himself on all counts but the House Speaker was more than equal to the task.
'You don't make my programme', she added, concluding with a brief biting question before fast pacing into the building to the Taliadoros dismay.
'Have I missed an appointment I wasn't aware of?'
