Parliament Approves Insurance Coverage For Armed Forces Personnel

The House of Representatives has unanimously approved amendments to existing regulations, formally introducing insurance coverage for members of the Armed Forces of the Republic in cases of death or permanent total incapacity for work incurred during the performance of their duties.

What the new insurance scheme provides

Under the amended regulations, insurance coverage applies to members of the Armed Forces who are entitled to a duty-related allowance and who suffer death or permanent total incapacity while carrying out the duties for which the allowance is paid.

In the event of death, the insurance compensation amounts to a lump sum of €115,000, which is distributed equally among the deceased’s heirs, in accordance with the procedures set out in the Law on the Administration of Deceased Persons’ Estates. In addition, an extra €95,000 is paid for each dependent.

Compensation in cases of permanent incapacity

In cases of permanent total incapacity for work, the beneficiary is entitled to a lump-sum payment of €115,000, plus €95,000 for each dependent.

Payment of compensation for permanent incapacity is made following a decision by the competent medical board and must result from injury sustained during the performance of duties as a member of the Armed Forces, or during the execution of tasks that establish entitlement to the relevant allowance.

No taxation and provisions for compensation claims

The amounts paid under the scheme are not subject to taxation or any other charges.

If a claim is brought against the Republic by either an heir of the deceased or a permanently incapacitated member of the Armed Forces for compensation related to death or incapacity, and the court determines that compensation is due, the amount already paid under these regulations will be taken into account and offset against the final compensation awarded.

Purpose of the allowances

The allowances are paid as compensation for the risk faced by members of the Armed Forces while carrying out specific hazardous duties. It is further noted that the level of each allowance was determined by a decision of the Council of Ministers dated 11 June 2025.
