Temperatures in Cyprus are expected to remain above normal over the weekend, while local rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for Monday. In some storms, hail and snow or sleet may occur over the higher peaks of the Troodos mountains.

The Department of Meteorology also warned that dust will be present in the atmosphere at times over the weekend, with concentrations possibly increasing until Monday night, before temporarily easing from Tuesday onwards.

Scattered rain and fog

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, meteorologist Andreas Chrysanthou said that today scattered local rain showers were expected, along with partial cloud cover, some dust, and local fog in certain areas.

He added that temperatures would remain above average until Monday, reaching around 19–20°C inland and along the coast, and around 10°C in higher mountainous regions.

Chrysanthou said that Sunday would be mostly cloudy, with the possibility of local fog in the interior and eastern areas overnight and in the early morning. Cloud cover was expected to persist throughout the day, particularly over the mountains, with light rain possible.

Thunderstorms on Monday

From Sunday evening, a weather disturbance currently over the western Mediterranean is expected to move eastwards. By the time it reaches the Greek mainland, it will also affect Cyprus. On Sunday, isolated showers are expected mainly in the west, while Monday is likely to bring more widespread local rain and isolated thunderstorms. In some cases, hail and snow or sleet may occur over the higher Troodos peaks.

“Monday is the most significant day in this forecast, with local rain and thunderstorms,” Chrysanthou said.

For Tuesday, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy, with some morning showers in the west, while both Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be mostly fair.

Regarding dust, Chrysanthou said that it will appear intermittently in the atmosphere today and tomorrow, with concentrations gradually increasing, particularly as the approaching disturbance lifts and transports dust eastwards. Dust may remain in the air until Monday night at elevated levels, before temporarily easing from Tuesday onwards.
