Athienou Municipality has been awarded the Green City of Cyprus distinction for the eighth consecutive year, following the restoration of its Municipal Market. The award recognises the reuse of materials in the project, which transformed the historic building into a multifunctional cultural centre.
Evaluation process and award decision
According to an announcement by Athienou Municipality, the award followed the completion of the evaluation of candidate projects by the Scientific Evaluation Committee for the Cyprus Green Cities and Green Communities Awards 2025. The evaluation was conducted through an online meeting attended by all members of the assessment committee.
Awarded project and category
The municipality received the Green City of Cyprus award for its project titled “Reuse of materials in the project ‘Restoration of the Municipal Market and its conversion into a multifunctional cultural centre’”. The project was recognised in the category “Culture and Environment” for the year 2025.
Continued participation in Green Cities network
With this distinction, Athienou Municipality continues its participation in the Network of Green Cities and Communities of Cyprus, coordinated by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education, for an eighth consecutive year.
Official award ceremony
The Green Flag awards will be presented at a special official ceremony at the Presidential Palace at a later date. The awards will be presented by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.
