A working meeting was held on Saturday at Paphos Town Hall between Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou and the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, to advance plans for a Regional Temporary Shelter for Stray Dogs serving the entire Paphos district.

Discussions focused on the next steps needed to implement the project, including measures to accelerate licensing and site‑selection procedures. Both sides stressed the importance of coordination between local authorities and state services to ensure the project proceeds efficiently and transparently.

According to the municipality, the planned shelter aims to create a “modern, organised and fully compliant facility” that will manage stray dogs in the district “with responsibility and compassion.” The project is expected to improve conditions for housing, treating and caring for animals, while strengthening adoption and reintegration efforts.

Describing the initiative as a “significant investment” for the local community, the municipality said it will enhance public health protection, promote animal welfare and reflect a contemporary, humane approach to managing strays.

All involved parties reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation to move the project forward as quickly as possible for the benefit of residents and animals in the Paphos district, the announcement added.
