According to a police announcement, the Cyprus Police played a decisive role in identifying, arresting and securing the conviction of a 53‑year‑old man in the United States for the online sexual abuse of children. The 53‑year‑old was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The investigation began in 2020 following information received by the Cyprus Cybercrime Unit. During the course of inquiries, it was established that the suspect was residing in the United States, and evidence was obtained indicating that his offences against children had taken place over a long period and involved a large number of victims across multiple US states.
After US authorities were notified, the case was taken over by the FBI in New York. Working closely with investigators from the Cybercrime Unit, US authorities were able to identify and locate additional victims aged between 13 and 17.
The 53‑year‑old was located and arrested, and on 29 January 2026, he was convicted by a US court and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment with no possibility of early release.
The Cyprus Police underline that the safety and protection of children from such heinous crimes is one of their priorities. This case demonstrates that sexual offences against children are a form of cross‑border crime, and highlights how cooperation and information exchange between law‑enforcement authorities in different countries can yield excellent results in the pursuit of justice.
