A 19 year old woman has died following a road traffic collision in the early hours of Tuesday on Agia Thekla Avenue in Sotira.

The victim, identified as Christina Achilleos, also 19 and from Sotira, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. The driver and front seat passenger were injured and were initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital before being transferred to Larnaca General Hospital for further examinations.

According to the Fire Service, the young woman was extricated from the vehicle using rescue equipment and handed over to ambulance crews, who transported her to the Accident and Emergency Department of Famagusta General Hospital.

Police said the 19 year old driver underwent both alcohol and drug tests, which returned negative results. Preliminary examinations also indicate that all four occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

The vehicle was carrying the 19 year old driver, a 20 year old front seat passenger and two 19 year old women in the rear seats. Under circumstances that remain under investigation, the car appears to have veered off course and collided with a concrete wall surrounding a water tank, where it came to a stop.

The second 19 year old rear passenger, whose condition was described as serious, was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital for treatment.

Famagusta traffic police are continuing their inquiries.
