Two Injured in Incident at Vasilikos Power Station

Gas release during maintenance works under investigation

wo people were injured following an incident at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station in Vasilikos, Larnaca district, on Thursday afternoon.

Initial reports referred to an explosion, but it was later clarified that the incident involved a “violent release of inert gas” used for firefighting purposes during maintenance operations.

Emergency response and hospitalisation

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the emergency call was received at 13:13, with firefighting crews responding immediately from Larnaca stations with a rescue team and vehicle.

The two injured individuals were treated at the scene by Fire Service personnel before being handed over to an ambulance crew.

They were subsequently transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of Limassol General Hospital for medical assessment.

Investigation underway

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation by the Department of Labour Inspection, which was called to the scene by the Fire Service.

Authorities are examining the cause of the gas release and the conditions under which the incident occurred.
