The Erasmus+ initiative DiscoverEU is offering 18-year-olds the chance to travel across Europe and explore its cultural diversity.
According to the Foundation for the Management of European Lifelong Learning Programmes, young people born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 can apply to travel for between one and 30 days. Trips will take place between 1 July 2026 and 30 September 2027, mainly by train.
DiscoverEU, launched by the European Parliament in 2018, allows 18-year-olds to discover Europe’s culture and history while meeting people from across the continent.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through the European Youth Portal between 8 April and 22 April 2026. Applicants need to register, outline their travel plans and complete a short quiz on the European Union and its youth initiatives.
Successful applicants can travel alone or in groups of up to five people, provided all are 18. Travel is mainly by train using the DiscoverEU travel pass.
Alternative transport, such as buses and ferries, is also available to ensure equal access. In cases like Cyprus, where there is no rail network, flights are exceptionally covered so participants can travel to and from other European countries.
Travel experiences
Participants can plan their own routes or choose themed journeys focused on sustainability, culture, architecture and the New European Bauhaus initiative.
They may also visit European Capitals of Culture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, locations with the European Heritage Label, and cities recognised for accessibility.
Additional benefits
Selected participants will receive a youth discount card offering reduced prices on transport, accommodation, food, cultural activities and more across Europe.
National Erasmus+ agencies also organise pre-departure meetings to provide guidance, as well as short gatherings in Cyprus where travellers can meet others from across Europe.
The programme places a strong emphasis on inclusion, with extra support available for young people with disabilities or health conditions.
