Winter weather is set to continue across Cyprus through Christmas, with steady rainfall and a generally positive hydrological picture, according to Filippos Tymvios, director of the Department of Meteorology. Speaking on Politis Radio, Tymvios said recent rainfall levels have been satisfactory, noting that December is shaping up to be a particularly strong month in terms of precipitation.
He explained that most of the rainfall recorded in recent days has concentrated in the western regions of the island, significantly improving overall hydrological conditions. Temperatures remain close to the seasonal average, without unusual fluctuations.
Short but intense rain system expected overnight
Tymvios issued a warning for a brief yet active system of heavy rain expected after 23:00 on Monday night. The intensity of the rain in a short period may cause localised problems, especially in coastal areas.
“This particular storm is expected to affect the eastern, southern and western coasts more strongly,” he noted. A new Yellow Warning has been issued in response to the expected conditions.
Christmas Day outlook
On Christmas Day, the weather will remain distinctly wintry, with cloud cover and isolated showers in various areas. A limited chance of thunderstorms is possible after midday.
Snowflakes may appear in the higher mountains, though Tymvios clarified that the conditions do not point to the possibility of a white Christmas.
