Proceedings concluded on Monday before the court in Trikomo in the north regarding the case of a Greek Cypriot woman charged with offences relating to personal data. The woman and her husband are expected to return to the government-controlled areas later today or by Tuesday at the latest, once the administrative steps for handing back their documents are finalised.
According to the ruling, the woman received monetary penalties of 12,000 and 100,000 Turkish lira, approximately 2,240 euro, for offences concerning the obtaining of personal data and violation of private life. The decision stipulates a three-month prison term for each charge in the event that the fines are not paid.
The court stated that, in determining the penalty, it took into account the woman’s clean criminal record, her expression of remorse and her age, noting that she is over 65 and faces health issues. It also noted that the data obtained had not been used to cause harm to any third party.
The ruling further provides for the return of the couple’s vehicle and a mobile phone that had been seized as evidence. They are now awaiting the completion of procedures for their documents to be returned, which will allow them to cross back through the checkpoints.
