Cyprus’ Civil Defence has issued a series of public safety recommendations aimed at reducing risks from heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and tornadoes, following a warning from the Meteorological Service that isolated but severe storms are expected to affect parts of the island at intervals.

Flood prevention measures

The Cyprus Civil Defence urges residents to take preventive steps to limit flood damage. Drains and manholes outside homes and workplaces should be kept clear, while gutters and downpipes must be checked to ensure they function properly.

For basements located in flood prone areas, Civil Defence recommends installing a water collection pit with an automatic pump and removing valuable items. In homes with yards, leaving areas of exposed soil is advised to allow the ground to absorb rainwater.

Loose or movable objects that could be carried away by floodwaters, such as water tanks and solar water heaters, should be securely fixed. Any gaps or weaknesses in boundary walls should be repaired. Sandbags should be available to block water from entering buildings, while unnecessary travel should be avoided and people should refrain from staying in basements during severe weather.

During flooding

The public is advised not to attempt to cross flooded roads on foot or by car, bicycle or motorcycle. If a vehicle becomes immobilised, it should be abandoned, as it may be swept away or flooded. People are urged to stay clear of live electrical cables and avoid areas affected by landslides.

After flooding

After a flood, residents should remain away from affected areas or locations at risk of further flooding in the following hours. Floodwaters may alter familiar landscapes, creating dangers such as damaged road surfaces, unstable ground or steep inclines. Water may also be contaminated after carrying debris or animals.

The public is asked not to obstruct rescue teams and to avoid using the telephone unless absolutely necessary. During clean up and recovery operations, electricity and water supply switches should be turned off.

Protection from tornadoes

To reduce the risk from tornadoes, Civil Defence advises removing from yards any objects that could be lifted or moved by strong winds and securely fastening items that cannot be removed.

Doors and windows should remain closed, while internal glass shutters should be left open to allow rapid equalisation of internal and external air pressure.

If caught outdoors, people should move away as quickly as possible from the path of the tornado and keep clear of objects that could become airborne. If escape is not possible, they are advised to lie face down in a depression in the ground and protect their head with their hands.
