The recent spell of rain has provided a notable boost to Paphos’ water balance, according to Charalambos Pittokopitis, president of the Paphos District Local Government Organisation (EOA Paphos).
He said inflows into the district’s dams have been satisfactory, with Asprokremmos dam recording the most substantial increase. Water inflow there is nearing 10 million cubic metres, pushing capacity above 18 per cent. Smaller but measurable inflows have also been recorded at Kannaviou and Evretou dams.

Based on current data, Pittokopitis said the situation is expected to be far more manageable than previously projected. He expressed cautious optimism that, with proper management, there will be no need for water supply cuts to households and businesses during the summer period.
Support for agriculture, but caution remains
The recent rainfall and improved inflows are expected to benefit the primary sector and farmers in particular. However, Pittokopitis stressed that the improvement does not justify complacency in water management.
He underlined the need for restraint, rational use and prudence in water consumption, noting that despite the progress, overall reserves remain low and the situation continues to be challenging.

He called on both local authorities and consumers to help reduce overconsumption and water losses. So far, he added, there have been no reports of damage linked to the recent rainfall.
