The New Cyprus Association expresses its deep concern about the recent Christmas message of the Archbishop of Cyprus. It is a speech that failed to meet its pastoral purpose, ignored the need for social reconciliation and distanced itself from the fundamental principles of the Christian faith.

Where a message of love, peace and hope was expected, a speech of conflict, confrontation and division prevailed. Instead of Christ, an extreme ideology was presented. And this is not just disappointing – it is dangerous.

True faith does not generate hostility nor is it used to deepen rifts. The speech that was expressed undermines any prospect of reunification, perpetuates stagnation and seals the division of our homeland.

We must remember that the Archbishop is neither a nationalist nor a political leader. His mission is not to draw geopolitical strategies, but to provide spiritual guidance, especially in a period when the Birth of Peace and love is being celebrated. We regret to note every day that the rhetoric that has followed since his election demonstrates a steady departure from his religious role.

Easy patriotic crowns are always uttered by people who will never be on the front lines; they will appear afterwards, to mourn the evil that has befallen them. Finally, they will wander around at events and memorial services to honor the dead that they themselves will have – once again – created. The history of 1974 is an irrefutable witness.

Our position is clear: we are fighting for the reunification of our homeland, peaceful coexistence and a common future. Any speech that undermines this goal, wherever it comes from, is unacceptable and condemnable.

In closing, we recall that in the history of our country there were times when some functioned not as spiritual guides, but as tax collectors to the detriment of the people, especially during the period of Turkish rule. If some are nostalgic for such times, let them know that society does not forget, does not remain silent and will never tolerate it again.

The New Cyprus Association will continue to speak clearly. Because silence in the face of derailment is not neutrality; it is complicity.

This press release will be communicated to the Holy Ecumenical Patriarchate.
