The Association for Social Reform (OPEK), in cooperation with Politis To The Point, the English-language online publication of the Politis Media Group, is organising a workshop titled Building a Resilient European Democracy on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 18:00.
The event will take place at the ground floor of the Politis Newspaper Building, located at 8 Vasileiou Voulgaroktonou Street, 1010 Nicosia. It is addressed to journalists, researchers, fact-checkers and citizens interested in European affairs and geopolitical developments.
Focus of the workshop
The workshop is dedicated to the exchange of experiences and best practices in countering disinformation and fake news.
It aims to facilitate the exchange of best practices in fact-checking, combating disinformation and understanding the narratives that influence democracy, security and stability in Europe. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing effective counter-narratives and strengthening the resilience of democratic societies against organised disinformation campaigns.

Speakers and contributions
Presentations and practical case studies will be delivered by:
- Loukia Taxitari, Fact-Check Cyprus
- Kyriakos Pieridis, Cyprus Investigative Reporting Network, CIReN
- Nikolas Karydis, Institute for Mass Media, IMME
The academic perspective will be presented by Michalis Zervianos, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at the Cyprus University of Technology.
Opening remarks will be delivered by:
- Theano Kalavana, Chairperson of the Board of OPEK
- Thanos Athanasiou, Press Officer of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus
- Eleni Constantinou, Secretary General of the Cyprus Union of Journalists
The discussion will be moderated by Peggy Spinelli, Editor-in-Chief of Politis To The Point.
Framework
The discussion is organised within the framework of the project Securing a European and Democratic Future, implemented under the EU Presidency Project 2024–2026 (EUPP5), with the support of CARDET.
The project aims to strengthen public dialogue and citizen participation on issues concerning the future of Europe, security, democracy and Cyprus.
