German federal MP Maximilian Krah, of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), travelled to Nicosia at the invitation of Ziya Öztürkler, the 'parliament president' in the north.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, Öztürkler addressed the significance of the visit during the meeting, which was also attended by Hasan Taçoy, an 'MP' for the "National Unity Party." Öztürkler said he was frustrated that a committee of the German Bundestag had twice rejected a similar invitation, and argued that Krah's contacts would help highlight the isolation of Turkish Cypriots, calling on foreign parliamentarians to pursue direct engagement.
Krah, for his part, claimed the criticism of his presence stemmed from "certain circles who do not want a solution" and allegedly refuse to accept the reality on the ground. He focused on issues of freedom of movement and international participation for Turkish Cypriots, arguing for the need for direct talks.
Taçoy said the German politician would hold a series of meetings with organisations and figures in the north, adding that the goal was to promote Turkish Cypriot positions in Europe without retreating from what he called their "red lines."
