The search for 75-year-old Erato (Toula) Athanasiou Zizirou, missing since Sunday 23 August from the Tsakistra area, remained in full swing on Tuesday.
Police said the search operation has been under way since Monday and continued through Tuesday, involving members of the police, the Fire Service, the Cyprus Mobile Emergency Response Unit (Emak), the Game and Fauna Service, volunteer teams and search dogs. Other services and volunteers are also assisting the effort. A coordination centre was set up on Monday to organise the searches across the wider area.
No new leads
As of Tuesday afternoon, police said no new information had emerged since the last confirmed sighting of the 75-year-old.
Athanasiou was seen at around 10.30am on Sunday walking along the main road of Tsakistra in the direction of Kykkos, near the village. No confirmed information about her movements has surfaced since that point.
Searches have since expanded across the wider mountainous area between Tsakistra, Kampos and Kykkos, a densely forested and difficult terrain marked by steep slopes and limited visibility. Units involved include the Police Special Operations Unit (Mmad), Emak with search dogs, a police helicopter, the Fire Service, the Forestry Department, the Game and Fauna Service and the Civil Defence, alongside volunteer teams. The Voluntary Emergency Response Unit (Etea) said drones have also been deployed in the search.
Community response
Mobilisation in the area has been significant, with residents and volunteers joining the search effort. The Kampos and Tsakistra Cultural Association cancelled a scheduled theatre performance, citing the seriousness of the situation and the need to keep community attention focused on the search.
Athanasiou is of slim build, approximately 1.75 metres tall, with short black hair and brown eyes.
