The musical adaptation of Purple Rain is set to make its Broadway debut in 2027, producers have announced.
Previews will begin on 12 March 2027 at the Majestic Theatre in New York, with opening night scheduled for 12 April 2027.
The production is based on the acclaimed 1984 film of the same name, which starred the late musician Prince, who also wrote the film's music. The story follows an aspiring performer known as "The Kid" as he pursues stardom while confronting personal challenges.
The Oscar-winning film spawned one of Prince's most celebrated albums, featuring hit songs including Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain.
Saheem Ali will direct the Broadway production, which features music and lyrics by Prince, a book by Peter Duchan, music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Jason Michael Webb, and choreography by Ebony Williams.
According to the show's synopsis:
"Minneapolis, 1984. A new era of music television is creating stars overnight. A charismatic young performer known as 'The Kid' seems destined to lead his bandmates to stardom. But when his past threatens everything he has built, he must sing his way out of the darkness and step into the spotlight where he belongs."
Prince died in April 2016 at the age of 57 from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
