Ierokipia Municipal Council will hold a three-hour peaceful protest on 3 August over what it describes as central government interference in local government and insufficient financial support for municipalities.
The protest will take place outside the Municipal Hall from 9:00 a.m. until noon, with council members, municipal employees and workers invited to attend voluntarily.
Concerns over municipal autonomy
In an announcement, the council expressed strong concern and disagreement over the central government’s approach towards Ierokipia Municipality and local government more broadly.
It said the protest was being organised in response to what it described as interference with the principle of local government, particularly the administrative and financial autonomy of municipalities.
According to the council, the state should provide municipalities with adequate and fairly distributed funding. Instead, it said, the financial burden was being transferred to municipalities and, ultimately, to residents.
Opposition to higher municipal charges
The council said the central government’s actions, statements and omissions were placing pressure on municipalities to increase fees and other charges imposed on residents.
Municipal authorities did not consider such increases fair or acceptable, it added, arguing that residents should not be required to cover the cost of inadequate state support.
The council said the issue affected not only the institutional independence of municipalities but also residents, who could ultimately be asked to bear the financial consequences.
Employees invited to participate voluntarily
Members of the Municipal Council will participate in the protest and have invited municipal employees, workers and other staff to attend and express their support.
Participation will be entirely voluntary. The council clarified that no employee would be required to attend or face unfavourable treatment, regardless of whether they joined the protest or remained at work.
The municipality said it would seek to maintain the smooth operation of its services and ensure that urgent or essential needs were addressed during the protest.
The council described the demonstration as peaceful and institutional, aimed at defending local government, the municipality’s administrative and financial autonomy and the interests of residents.
