A bilingual publication by historian and researcher Andreas Kokkinoftas brings together stories examining historical, cultural and human connections between Cypriot and Jewish communities over the centuries.
When Aphrodite Met King David, published by Armida Publications, was presented at an event by the Embassy of Israel in Cyprus alongside the launch of its new digital edition.
Stories spanning centuries
The publication explores connections across archaeology, religious traditions, agriculture, architecture, art and sport, as well as individual encounters and experiences.
Among the subjects covered are ancient links between Cypriot ceramics and the Land of Israel, the Jewish heritage of medieval Famagusta, the contribution of architect Ginsburg to modern Cyprus, and connections involving Jaffa citrus and Cypriot agricultural traditions.
It also examines the legacy of Pertsiena and the history of Jewish refugees held in detention camps in Cyprus, alongside other episodes reflecting interaction and exchange over the centuries.
Digital edition released
The new digital version accompanies the printed edition and makes the publication available to a wider readership.
