The film Missing Frequencies by Nafsika Hadjichristou won the Jury Award in the National Competition section of Animafest Cyprus 2026, conveying the filmmaker's personal experience of hearing disability through a distinctive visual and auditory language.
The top prize in the National Competition of the 25th Cyprus International Animation Festival, Views of the World (Countryside Animafest Cyprus) was awarded to Hadjichristou's Missing Frequencies.
The jury, comprising Keti Papadema (Cyprus), Roberto Panganelli (Italy) and Jakob Schuh (Germany), singled out the film for the way it translates the director's personal experience of hearing impairment into a unique visual and sonic form.
In its citation, the jury stated:
"The Jury Award in the National Competition goes to Missing Frequencies by Nafsika Hadjichristou. With courage, the director transforms her personal experience of hearing disability into a distinctive visual and auditory language. Through a successful combination of live action and different forms of animation, she draws us into her sensory world with great sensitivity."
Missing Frequencies was one of seven Cypriot productions selected for this year's Animafest Cyprus competition programme.
Cyprus also featured in the Audience Awards, with Feed the Cat by Michalis (Mike) Charalambous winning the National Competition Audience Award.
The 25th edition of Animafest Cyprus concluded on 9 August in Koilani, Limassol, following four days of screenings, concerts, workshops and artistic interventions.
This year's competition programme featured 30 international films and seven Cypriot films, while a further 15 international productions were screened in the Youth Audience programme.
The festival is supported by the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
