A major wildfire remained out of control in Kouvaras, Greece, on Monday morning after breaking out in low vegetation at around 08:00. Two livestock businesses on the outskirts of the Agios Stylianos settlement have been damaged, while firefighting forces continue to be reinforced.
Strong winds complicate operation
According to the Fire Service, strong winds are pushing the blaze away from the settlement and towards the mountain.
The flames have entered a ravine, making access and firefighting operations more difficult. The extent of the damage to the two affected businesses will be assessed once the fire has been extinguished.
Nearly 200 firefighters deployed
A total of 197 firefighters and 42 vehicles are operating at the scene, supported by seven ground teams from the 1st and 8th Special Forest Operations Units and volunteers.
The deployment includes 23 firefighters and four vehicles from France, as well as 24 firefighters and five vehicles from Romania. Both teams are in Greece under the European firefighters’ pre-positioning programme.
Two aircraft and seven helicopters have also been deployed, with one helicopter coordinating the aerial operation. The Municipality of Saronikos is assisting with water tankers.
Evacuation alert issued
Two emergency messages were sent through Greece’s 112 alert system.
At 08:30, people in the wider Agios Stylianos Kouvaras area were instructed to evacuate towards Kalyvia Thorikou. An earlier message, issued at 08:10, warned residents and others in the wider area about the fire.
The region is under a very high fire-risk warning, category four, on Monday.
Traffic diversions introduced
Police have introduced traffic diversions on Souniou Avenue from its junction with Lavriou Avenue in the direction of Agios Stylianos.
Traffic is also being diverted on Eleftheriou Venizelou Avenue from the junction with Agiou Georgiou Street.
