Despite Julie Andrews' statement that she does not plan to return for “The Princess Diaries 3”, the invitation from Disney remains open, according to Anne Hathaway, who is set to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight during the D23 convention, Hathaway said the production would welcome Andrews back should she change her mind.
“First of all, I want to say that if she changes her mind, we are absolutely open to it,” Hathaway said.
She added that the filmmakers fully respect whatever decision Andrews makes.
“For goodness' sake, if there is anyone who has given so much to the entertainment world and to our collective joy, it's her.”
Hathaway said the team had made a genuine effort to see whether Andrews would be interested in returning to the franchise.
“Whatever she decides, we completely understand. But we really did try to see if she would like to be involved,” she added.
Andrews previously indicated that she does not intend to return for the third instalment of the Disney series.
Hathaway is set to reprise the role of Mia Thermopolis, the character she first portrayed in The Princess Diaries in 2001.
