President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the passing of a bill by the House Plenary on Thursday amending the Constitution that guarantees the financial autonomy of the Audit Office and establishes, for the first time, a specific term of office, as well as specific qualifications that the Auditor General and the Assistant Auditor General should have.

In a written statement, the President refers to a historic turning point and the first decisive step for the reform of one of the leading institutions of the state, 65 years after the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.

"Our reform path continues with consistency and determination. We are moving forward with the implementation of significant institutional changes that modernise the state, strengthen accountability and ensure a more effective and transparent public administration at the service of the citizen”, he said.

The House Plenary voted in favour of amending articles of the Constitution, towards the modernisation and strengthening of the effectiveness of the Auditor General and the Assistant Auditor General, as well as the Audit Office of the Republic in general.

The discussion and vote took place in the presence of Justice Minister, Marios Hartsiotis.
