Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov has once again drawn international attention, combining a record-setting real estate acquisition with ownership of one of the world’s most striking mega yachts.
The country’s richest individual, with an estimated net worth of $7.8 billion, has made headlines following the reported purchase of an ultra-luxury apartment in Monaco worth around $500 million. Located in the high-profile Mareterra development, the multi-level property resembles a private skyscraper overlooking the Mediterranean, underscoring the continued appeal of high-end real estate among global elites.
A floating resort at sea
Attention has also focused on the Luminance, a 138.8-metre motor yacht delivered in early 2024. Built in Germany by Lürssen at its Bremen shipyard, the vessel ranks among the most advanced and visually impressive yachts in its class.
Designed externally by Espen Øino and featuring interiors by France’s Zuretti Design, the yacht blends engineering precision with the aesthetics of a five-star resort. Its scale and layout place it closer to a luxury hotel than a conventional private vessel.
The yacht accommodates up to 40 guests across 20 suites, supported by a crew of 24. Onboard amenities include a spa, beauty salon, gym, beach club, jacuzzi, swimming pool and helipad. Additional features such as an elevator, underwater lighting, WiFi and full climate control contribute to a self-contained luxury environment.
Engineering and performance
Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and finished with teak decks, the Luminance is powered by twin 16-cylinder MAN diesel engines delivering a combined 9,789 horsepower. It cruises at 15 knots and can reach speeds of up to 20 knots.
A modern stabilisation system ensures comfort both underway and at anchor, while the vessel meets strict standards set by Lloyd’s Register, reflecting compliance with contemporary safety and environmental requirements.
The cost of extreme luxury
The yacht’s construction cost is estimated at around $500 million. Annual maintenance is believed to range between $40 million and $50 million, covering crew salaries, fuel, technical support, insurance, port fees and ongoing upgrades.
Together, the Monaco property and the Luminance illustrate the scale of investment and lifestyle associated with one of Eastern Europe’s most powerful business figures.
