A 14-year-old student shot dead his grandparents before carrying out a deadly attack at a secondary school near Bangkok on Friday, killing five members of staff before taking his own life, police said. The attack left eight people dead, including the gunman, and more than 20 others injured.
The shooting took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of the Thai capital. Police said the teenager used a handgun belonging to his grandfather after allegedly killing both grandparents at their home earlier that morning. He later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Dozens injured
Authorities said those killed at the school were teachers and other staff members. More than 20 people were injured, several of them seriously, and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police recovered dozens of unused rounds of ammunition from the scene as they continued their investigation into the attack.
The motive remains under investigation, although Thai officials said the teenager had reportedly been experiencing stress related to school. Classes at the school were suspended while investigators examined the scene and authorities provided support to students, staff and families affected by the shooting.
The attack is Thailand's deadliest school shooting in nearly four years and has renewed concerns over gun access and school safety in a country with one of the highest rates of civilian firearm ownership in Southeast Asia.
