A unique opportunity for young women in Cyprus to experience diplomacy first-hand is being offered through the initiative “Woman Ambassador for a Day”, implemented by female‑led embassies serving in Cyprus.
According to a press release, the “Diplomat for a Day” initiative, implemented in several European countries in recent years, aims to inspire and encourage young women to pursue careers in diplomacy and international relations.
In Cyprus, the initiative is carried out through the collaboration of embassies led by female ambassadors from European and non‑European countries and forms part of joint activities marking the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, fostering dialogue on gender equality and women’s participation in global affairs.
The Embassy of Hungary in Nicosia, acting as coordinator of this initiative on behalf of the participating embassies, invites young women to apply for the programme. Eligibility criteria are female Cypriot nationals, aged 18-30, and strong interest in diplomacy and international relations.
Selected candidates will have the opportunity to spend one day alongside a female ambassador between 26 May and 24 June 2026, on a date to be arranged in consultation with the embassy.
Applicants are required to submit a one-page personal introduction, a half-page motivational letter explaining their interest in the programme, their views on the International Day of Women in Diplomacy and its importance in international relations and full contact details (full name, email, phone number). The deadline is the 11 May 2026. Applications are sent to events.nic@mfa.gov.hu.
The Ambassador of Hungary in Nicosia, Dr. Krisztina Lakos, said that today’s diplomacy needs the voice, perspective and leadership of women more than ever.
Through this initiative, she pointed out, we are not simply offering an experience — we are creating role models, opening pathways, and empowering a new generation to actively shape our world.
"Equal participation of women is not an option; it is a necessity for sustainable and effective international policy” she concluded.
