The Israeli military said early Tuesday it had begun a new “large-scale wave of strikes” on Tehran, the capital of Iran, on the 17th day of the war launched by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic on 28 February. Iranian authorities, meanwhile, accused Israel of causing severe environmental damage through strikes on fuel storage facilities.
Israeli military announces new strikes
According to a statement by the Israeli army on Telegram, the targets of the latest air raids were “infrastructure of the Iranian terrorist regime in Tehran”.
The military did not provide further details regarding the specific locations or extent of the attacks.
Iran alleges environmental destruction
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of causing significant environmental harm during the strikes.
In a message posted on X, he said that Israeli bombardment of fuel storage installations in Tehran violates international law and constitutes “ecocide”.
Health concerns for residents
Araghchi warned that the attacks could have long-term health consequences for residents.
He said contamination of soil and underground water reserves could create lasting environmental damage with effects that may impact future generations.
