Despite Heavy Strikes, Iran Retains Significant Military Capability

Sustained strikes have inflicted damage, but not delivered the decisive outcome Washington projected.

Iran retains a substantial portion of its military capabilities despite weeks of sustained US and Israeli strikes, according to recent US intelligence assessments cited by CNN.

Significant Arsenal Remains

Roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers remain intact, while thousands of one-way attack drones are still operational, according to sources familiar with the assessment. The findings suggest Tehran continues to pose a serious threat across the region. The assessment may include launchers that are currently inaccessible, such as those buried underground following strikes but not destroyed.

Iran’s ability to preserve much of its arsenal is partly due to its extensive network of tunnels and underground facilities, developed over decades in anticipation of such conflict.

Mobile launch platforms can be quickly deployed and relocated, making them difficult to track and target. US and Israeli forces have increasingly focused on tunnel entrances and the equipment used to access these sites in an effort to limit Iran’s operational flexibility.

Strait of Hormuz Still at Risk

The intelligence assessment also indicates that a large portion of Iran’s coastal defense cruise missiles remains intact. These systems are key to Tehran’s ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy routes.

Despite ongoing operations, US officials have privately acknowledged challenges in fully securing the waterway.

Claims vs Intelligence

The findings present a more nuanced picture than public statements by US President Donald Trump and senior administration officials, who have emphasized the scale of damage inflicted on Iran’s military.

In recent remarks, Trump said Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones had been “dramatically curtailed,” adding that only a limited number of launchers remained.

Reduced Attacks, Not Eliminated Threat

US officials point to a sharp decline in Iranian attacks, with the Pentagon stating that missile and drone launches have dropped by around 90 percent since the start of the conflict.

However, the intelligence assessment suggests that while the frequency of attacks has decreased, Iran’s underlying capabilities remain largely intact. Iran continues to maintain a sizeable stockpile of missiles, preserving its capacity for sustained retaliation.

While Iran’s conventional navy has been heavily damaged, the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are believed to retain significant capabilities. These include hundreds of small boats and unmanned surface vessels, which are central to Iran’s strategy of disrupting shipping in the Gulf.

No Clear End in Sight

The assessment also raises doubts about the timeline outlined by Washington, which has suggested that military operations could conclude within weeks.

Officials briefed on the intelligence argue that such expectations may be unrealistic, given the scale of capabilities Iran still retains. Despite the sustained campaign and significant damage inflicted, Iran remains capable of continued military action across the region.

The gap between public messaging and intelligence findings underscores a key reality: while weakened, Iran is far from defeated and the conflict shows little sign of ending soon.
